The City of Belfast School of Music, were welcomed into the beautiful surroundings of St Malachy’s College, Belfast for this year’s Summer Orchestra Courses.
The first two days welcomed 46 young string players from the Greater Belfast area playing energetic string music, including Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’. The latter 3 days brought together 70 young orchestral musicians for the full orchestra course.
A Students' Recital gave the opportunity for our young musicians to demonstrate hidden talents, treating us to some Chopin, Irish Traditional music and a brand-new rendition of Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’, arranged by the students themselves. Students also had the opportunity to hone their orchestral conducting skills.
The week culminated in a full orchestra performance to a packed College Hall, featuring Strommen’s ‘Cumberland Cross,’ Powell’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, Hardimann’s ‘Lord of the Dance’ and a special performance of Peter Martin’s abridged Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto featuring soloist, Senan Sheridan.
We are very grateful to all the team at St Malachy’s College for hosting our young musicians this summer.
