Whilst not a regular member of the orchestra, the harp is often added for a heavenly, other worldly sounds.

The harp frame is like a large number 7, and typically has 47 strings that mimic the white keys of a piano.  Attached to the bottom of the harp are seven foot pedals, which change the pitch of each string and allow them to sound the pitches of the black keys on the piano. The strings are colour coded to tell them apart easily, and the player sits with the harp resting on the right shoulder, and the strings are plucked with both hands. The harp has been around for over 1000 years, and can play early music to contemporary compositions, traditional Irish music, jazz and other genres.
