The cello looks like the violin and viola but is much larger, and has thicker strings than either the violin or viola.
Of all the string instruments, the cello sounds most like a human voice, and it can make a wide variety of tones, from warm low pitches to bright higher notes. Although sound is produced in the same way as a violin or viola, the cello is played while seated; the body resting between the knees and its neck resting alongside the left shoulder and neck of the musician. When first invented, the cello served mainly to reinforce the bass line in ensembles, but its beautiful tone and versatility soon encouraged composers to create solos for the cello, and even famous unaccompanied pieces that are very popular today.
