Robert Goodman
Foyle College Jazz Band was formed in the year 2000 by EA Brass Tutor Robert Goodman as a training project. The aim was to give pupils the experience of performing various ‘light’ music styles and also give pupils the opportunity to ‘solo’ using Jazz Improvisation as an expressive art form. Since then the band has performed every year at the City of Derry Jazz Festival as well as many other community and charity events and School concerts. The pupils have also participated in workshops with the Heavy Beats Brass Band who performed at the Jazz Festival for the last 2 years but they also managed to visit the School and got a great response.
Foyle College also has a very talented and enthusiastic Junior Jazz Band who rehearse at lunchtime, they have very different tastes from the Seniors and they can move up in year 11 even though some of the Seniors enjoy helping out with the Junior Band if needed!
The pupils generally choose the pieces they want to perform (within reason) so there is a wide variety of styles - Soul, R&B, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Funk, Swing/ Trad/ Cool Jazz, and Latin, they have good taste!
